Medieval Masterpieces |
Program Description: Rich intellectual and technical achievements distinguish the art of the Middle Ages. Throughout Europe manuscript illumination, architecture, sculpture and metal work flourished under the patronage of church and court. In this lesson students will encounter splendid liturgical objects such as a gold and porphyry altarpiece made for an 11th c. German countess, and a silver vessel for a holy relic obtained from a Byzantine emperor. Courtly items also featured in the lesson include a whimsical table fountain and Gothic style tapestries made for a chateau. Biblical subjects such as Daniel in the lion’s den—seen on a medieval column capital—help make connections between art and religion for classes studying world religions, culture and/or European history.

Native Americans and Settlers: Encounters in Early Ohio History |
Program Description: Tools, documents, and paintings from the collections of the Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) in Cleveland and the Cleveland Museum of Art evoke the lives of Native Americans and settlers in Northeast Ohio. Educators from both the WRHS and the CMA guide students through an examination of the mutual perceptions between the Native Americans and settlers as well as the historical environment created by their encounters during the 18th and early 19th century. During this lesson upper elementary students participate in a bartering exercise to help them imagine transactions and issues of mutual dependence between the two groups. The high school version of the lesson features information and discussion based on primary documents at the WRHS such as Moses Cleveland’s Letter to the Six Nations (an association of Eastern Woodlands Native Americans in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio). An in-classroom activity kit accompanies the lesson for upper elementary students.

Renaissance Painting: An Overview |
Program Description: Selected painting from the CMA collection help acquaint students with the Renaissance, the transitional period of European history in which learning and the arts blossomed and medieval thought was gradually subjected to the beginnings of scientific scrutiny. Portraiture, early landscape elements, and contemporary details in these works show the artists’ growing attention to the world around them. Specialized vocabulary words (e.g. perspective, patron, altarpiece, tondo) introduce basic concepts related to Renaissance painting.
This lesson includes teaching extensions on one-point perspective in which students give flat shapes the appearance of three dimensional objects by drawing converging lines to a vanishing point. These same principles are used in a follow up project for drawing a room in 3-D. Further, a videoconference viewing guide on pespective adds an engaging interactivity to this distance learning experience.

Elephant Sanctuary |
Program Description: Each program begins with a visit to the Sanctuary's on-site office. For the first time visitor we suggest viewing our introductory video The Asian Elephant. This 7-minute video is a valuable teaching tool for students with limited exposure to this endangered species. The video is transmitted over the teleconference system. If your time is limited, or if you are a repeat visitor, we can omit the video viewing.
Through an additional camera in our elephants' habitat, students are privy to the private lives of the elephants residing at the Sanctuary. This non-intrusive observation allows viewers to experience natural elephant behavior in a wild setting, and enables them to become familiar with each elephant - her history, habits, and how moving to the sanctuary has changed her life. These elephants represent a new age of captive elephant management; what they are teaching us is invaluable.
The Elephant Sanctuary has developed two units focusing on the study of elephants. One unit is appropriate for grades K - 3; the second unit is appropriate for grades 4 - 8. The K - 3 unit consists of 35 pages of background information for the teacher and learning activities for children. The curriculum for grades 4 - 8 consists of 72 pages of instruction, background information, charts and graphs, activities, etc. Areas of study, such as social studies, literature, math, and science have been integrated into the units. |

Comets: Visitors from the Unknown |
Program Description: This interactive event focuses on what happened to all of the debris that was left behind after the initial formation of our solar system. Students are guided into discovering that rocky debris fell onto the newly formed planets, causing craters in solid surfaces, while icy debris was swept out of the solar system by the solar wind. The icy debris orbits our sun in an enormous cloud midway between our sun and the next closest stars! These condensed clots of ice, stone, and dust (dirty snowballs) are comets, which we see when they fall inward toward the sun. |

John Philip Sousa |
Program Description: John Philip Sousa was more than a composer and conductor, though he conducted his own extremely successful band for over 30 years and performed his own music. His compositions were performed throughout the world with great success. Mr. Sousa was a household word, a legend in his own time, and beyond doubt one of the most important figures in the band movement.
Mr. Sousa was not only a musical genius, but also a sportsman, athlete, trap shooter, scholar, writer, master entertainer, and gentleman. In addition to composing 137 marches (The Star Spangled Banner is the most recognizable), he also composed 189 other pieces ranging from operettas to waltzes to humoresques to instrumental solos. In addition, he wrote seven books, 138 articles, and 27 letters to the editor. Sousa wrote marches that would make "a man with a wooden leg step out," was the "pied piper of patriotism," and remains as one of the most interesting and successful entertainers in our nation’s history.

e-Mission Operation Montserrat |
Program Description: New Emergency Response Teams will work with us on Mission: Montserrat. During the past few months, the volcano on this beautiful Caribbean island has threatened to erupt. Scientists have put volcanic-activity-measuring equipment at important locations on the island. This equipment helps us predict what will happen next. Because of the island's unique geologic formations, the sensors have not been gathering reliable data. We must keep gathering data about the island's volcanic activity. If we don't know what is going on, people's lives could be in danger. To replace the communication system on the island, we will be using e-Mission Headquarters' Low Earth Orbiting satellite. Just before the scheduled e-Mission: Montserrat, a Space Shuttle must be launched. The crew will upgrade the Low Earth Orbiting satellite. |

Birds of a Feather |
Program Description: All birds have feathers, and birds are the only organisms to have them. What can be learned about birds from their feathers?
This videoconference emphasizes the importance of adaptation in organisms. Examine the structure of several types of feathers and identify the differences. This will help students recognize how to look for adaptations and determine why they are important. In addition, other bird adaptations may be discussed (beaks, feet, etc.) as well as the research methods used at SERC to track the migratory routes of birds.
This videoconference can be extended by a component involving life birds, during which students can compare and contrast the feeding habits of two different raptors. Hawks feed during the day but owls feed at night, and what they eat can be determined from their pellets. Because this demonstration involves life birds, please inform us of your interest in this additional component.

Animal Groups |
Program Description: Children will discuss the variety of living organisms and why we name and group them. Concepts of living or non-living, plant or animal will be introduced. Classes will learn that science categorizes animals based on differences and likenesses, introducing the terms vertebrates/invertebrates. Live animals and animal biofacts* will be on hand to “test” whether students have learned the basic differences in five classes of vertebrates (i.e. fish, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.) Students will participate in sorting games that illustrate how groups are formed using sameness and difference. |

Animal Classification |
Program Description: Students will discuss the variety of living organisms and why we name and group them. Students will learn who created binomial nomenclature, why the world of science needed it, and why we have to learn all that Latin! A few basic Latin root words used in classification will be introduced. Younger students will see carnivore and herbivore skulls (and learn about omnivores) and then discuss how what an animal eats creates another way of grouping. Older students will learn the word taxonomy and the divisions of kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Working in groups, students will create pneumonic devices to remember this. Games and sorting strategies will be employed to see how science uses differences and likenesses to form groups. Using live animals, students will classify (as a class) to test their understanding of what they’ve learned. |

The Uganda Connection: Making a Difference |
Program Description: The Uganda Connection is a 6-week intensive study targeting middle school students. The program will commence with a videoconference session with Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Throughout the following weeks, students will work with teachers in their own locations as they learn about forest conservation and wildlife affected by deforestation. The chimpanzee will be used as the primary example. Contact will be maintained between all the students and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo via email messages sent a minimum of twice per week. Near the end of the month, students will begin designing a plan of action to help stop deforestation and save the chimpanzee in Uganda. The culminating lesson will include the students in both countries by presenting their projects and comparing/contrasting the conservation issues that face the U.S. and Uganda.
There will be a fee for this program. This fee will be partially dependent upon how many groups register for this class. Up to three US groups will be allowed to participate. Other sites may be allowed to observe.
To apply for this program teachers need to be able to complete the assigned lesson plans prior to each videconferencing session. Also, due to the time difference between the U.S. and Uganda, teachers and students must be able to attend videoconference during early hours in the morning. Please note that times and dates are subject to change.
Please contact the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for dates. |
